24th Street Theatre Big Draw LA event

The 24th Street Theatre held two Big Draw LA events this past October in preparation for their Dia De Los Muertos program in early November. These images were submitted by the 24th Street Theatre as part of their Drawing Inspiration Awards application. Winners of the Drawing Inspiration Awards will be announced in December.

All Big Draw LA event organizing venues are encouraged to send in 5 images along with a short report (email me for details thebigdrawla@ryman.org) by Wednesday, Nov. 30.

On Sunday morning, October 16th, a long scroll of paper was rolled out across the Exposition Park and close to 3000 people gathered to draw in public. Various age groups--from little children to adults--led their creativity to fill the city. As a Ryman Art student along with several AVPA Art students from CCHS, I participated in this special event, "Big Draw LA".
The Big Draw LA is a month long event that creates opportunities for everyone to see how essential art is and to celebrate the act of drawing and highlight the importance of drawing in our culture .On the scroll that stretched from inside of the Natural History Museum to the Rose Garden, Ryman students helped and collaborated with participants of all ages to create a long panoramic drawing.

"It was great being able to draw outdoors just for the fun of it. The best part was probably walking around and looking at everyone's work and seeing such a variety of things that people made," said AVPA Senior, Mohammad Chowdhury.
The drawing is now on the Big Draw LA website, http://thebigdrawla.org. It was such a compelling project where anyone in the community can enjoy art and feel how easy is it to access art. I felt like drawing with people of all ages, gender, and ethnicity broke the boundaries of differences and emerged everyone into a common community where we are all interconnected through art.

Thank you to all the Angelenos who came out to draw at one of The Big Draw LA events during October. The Big Draw LA, a month-long initiative, created opportunities of all ages to discover that drawing can help us SEE, THINK and INVENT. Teaming up with museums, galleries, parks, Cities, libraries and community organizations, Ryman Arts spearheaded over 60 Big Draw events across Los Angeles.

Over the next month, images from the different events will be posted here as well as information on an up-coming panel discussing the issues of active audience participation in the arts to culminate the Big Draw LA for this year.

Again, thank you to all who picked up a piece of chalk, a crayon, a pencil, a brush, some pastels and drew!

The last week of the 2011 The Big Draw LA here. A month long of drawing across the Southland, we've had over 62 events in the 31 days of October! We still have a few sketchbooks to give out, so with the closing days upon us we're doing a new contest.

The Big Draw LA covers a lot of ground this weekend with events spread throughout the Southland, including Lake Elsinore, Pacific Palisades, VAAS in Granada Hills, Charmlee Park in Malibu, Otis College of Art and Design, California African American Museum, the reDiscover Center, the Skirball Cultural Center, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center and the 24th Street Theatre.

This Sunday, October 16, Ryman Arts' will present their own Big Draw LA event with Make Your Mark in the Park at Exposition Park, 12 noon-3pm. We're be laying down a half-mile long canvas, going from one end of Exposition Park to the other end (including through The Rose Garden and into the Natural History Museum).

The Big Draw LA, Friday, Oct. 7

There are two Big Draw LA events today, Friday, Oct. 7.

The first one is this afternoon at Lincoln Heights Branch of the LA Public Library, 4-5pm. It's a chance for teens to draw and trade drawings of horses. The drawings will be on index sized cards and either of a head or tail of a horse. Attendees can do as many as they want and will be encouraged to be as creative as they like. A full deck of horses for each participant will be made available on a later date.

The second event this Friday, Oct. 7th, 10pm-1am, is for adults and will see the Gallery Girls model for 3 hours on 2 stages at Gallery Godo in Glendale. The costume theme being the Japanese theater art "Kabuki." The event will feature music, snacks and drinks (cash bar). The cost of admission is $20.

The Big Draw LA event in Long Beach this Sunday, Oct. 9

Confetti and Coffee will lead a sidewalk chalk drawing program on Sunday, October 9^th, 2011 9am-noon, Ocean Blvd. (Between Cherry/Junipero) during the 2011 Long Beach Marathon & Half Marathon. The Big Draw LA 2011

Ryman Arts presents The Big Draw LA, a month-long initiative aimed to get Angelinos participating in art!

The Big Draw LA creates participatory opportunities for people of all ages to discover that drawing can help us look more closely, inspire creative thinking, communicate with others, and have fun in the process. Ryman Arts launched the inaugural Big Draw LA in October 2010 with 30 events across Los Angeles organized by museums, schools and other organizations.

The Big Draw LA is inspired by the wildly popular Big Draw that originated in London by the Campaign for Drawing. The Big Draw is now celebrated around the world each October to raise awareness of drawing's power as a tool for learning, observation, creativity, and social and cultural engagement.

The Big Draw LA's 2011 events can be found online at www.thebigdrawla.org event's page, where currently 40 events (and counting) are listed.
